PROJECT SCOPE

Design a Chapbook inspired by the podcast episode “Such is the Way to the Stars” from Love + Radio written by Andrew Blossom. The podcast episode is a fantastic journey through Richmond, Virginia’s lingering past. From scandalous historical uncoverings to real interviews from today, Such is the Way to the Stars creatively uncovers the darker history of the capital of Virginia. 

DESIGN CONCEPT

The design of the Chapbook takes the stories of the podcast as inspiration. The mysterious tone of the narrator translates into the visual style of the spreads. As the narrator takes us through a journey that ties a number of stories together, meshing reality with legends, so does the layout design mesh these different narrations in print. The primary design elements are the colors red and black. I created a library of images that showed the places and people the episode highlights edited with a red duotone to fit the mysterious tone of the narrator. The conversational parts of the narrative are designed on black spreads.
