PROJECT SCOPE

A design festival inspired by the animation work of Hayao Miyazaki in Studio Ghibli. The project called for a design system that could be applied to websites, mobile apps, printed programs, tickets, and passes as well as large-scale signage as well as event merchandise, and staff uniforms.

DESIGN CONCEPT

The festival was focused on the themes of feminism and environmentalism in Miyazaki’s work. Inspired by the fantasy and magic in Studio Ghibli’s films, the primary design elements for the design are organic shapes and textures with an otherwordly color palette. Overlayed on the textures there are two main elements: Hayao Miyazaki’s female leads are depicted in outlines that face away from the viewer and lines that end in prominent swirls and frame/underline certain elements in the compositions. The typography of the project is done with the faces: Victorian Orchid and Short Films, both designed by Japanese Typographer Ryoichi Tsunekawa. The design elements all come together to create a design homage to Hayao Miyazaki and take the audience on the a journey that mimics the tone and style of his movies.
